Energy, Environment and the Sustainability of Economic Development in China AgEcon
Fang, Xingming; Hu, Xiaoping; Wang, H. Holly.
Whether the high economic growth of China is sustainable is the matter of interest to the public, government and academic circle of China and meanwhile it catches the attention of the world because the development of China has been exerting increasing impact on the world economy. Since the high economic growth of China has been promoted by heavy and chemical industry (HCI) to a great extent, which resulted in high consumption of energy resource, high consumption of mineral resources and high emission of pollutants (the “triple highness”), the sustainability of high economic growth of China depends on a sustainable growth road for China’s HCI and effective control on the “triple highness”. We find that the contributing factors of the “triple highness” are...

Environmental risk factors related to the development of canine non-Hodgkin's lymphoma Ciência Rural
Zanini,Danielle Almeida; Kimura,Katia Cristina; Nishiya,Adriana Tomoko; Ubukata,Rodrigo; Leandro,Rafael Magdanelo; Brito,Claudia Prado de; Trombetti,Márcia; Lagoa,Ana Carolina; Macedo,Thais Rodrigues; Rodrigues,Lucas Campos de Sá; Rosendo,Janaína Aparecida da Silva; Arndt,Helen Lyrio; Dias,Ricardo Augusto; Dagli,Maria Lúcia Zaidan.
This research aimed to investigate the possible risk factors associated with the development of canine non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Owners of 83 dogs with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and of 84 healthy dogs answered an epidemiological questionnaire. Dogs who lived outside of the house and within 100 meters of busy streets or avenues (defined as more than 50 vehicles per minute) had a higher risk for developing the disease (OR: 3.1, 95% CI: 1.4-6.9, P=0.005). These results suggest that air pollution derived from vehicle traffic may be associated with the development of canine non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Estimating the Welfare Effect of Congestion Taxes: The Critical Importance of Other Distortions Within the Transport System AgEcon
Parry, Ian W.H.; Bento, Antonio M..
This paper uses analytical and numerical models to illustrate how the presence of other distortions within the transport system changes the overall welfare effect of a congestion tax. These other distortions include a transit fare subsidy, congestion on competing (unpriced) routes, accident externalities, gasoline taxes, and pollution externalities. Each of these pre-existing distortions can substantially alter the welfare effect of a congestion tax that would be predicted by a first-best analysis. If congestion taxes encourage travel on other congested routes, they can produce sizeable indirect welfare losses. In addition, induced reductions in the demand for gasoline can lead to substantial welfare losses when, as appears to be the case for European...

His, Edouard; Quiniou, Francoise.
The quality of the seawater off the southwestern Atlantic coast of France was assessed by studying the effects of the water from three sites (Arcachon Bay, Mimizan and Capbreton) on larvae of the mussel (Mytilus edulis). Mussel larvae were raised in water samples taken at all three sites on March 12, 1991 and larval growth was monitored during 10 days. The results indicate that the water quality was best in the Bay of Arcachon, followed by Mimizan, whereas the water off Capbreton was possibly contaminated by pollutants.

Dardignac, Marie-jose; Bodoy, Alain; Garnier, Jacqueline; Heurtebise, Serge; Legrand, Jacqueline.

Masson, Daniel; Papon, Denis.

Catherine, Martial; Dumont, Francoise; Pezeron, Annie; Menanteau, Chantal.

Algae have been used as bioindicators by having several advantages such as they have short life cycles, they can take up nutrients directly from water, they are generally easy to collect in sufficient amounts from various habitats; and they readily accumulate compounds present in seawater, making tissue analyses reliable indicators of water quality. In order to evaluate the bioremoval capability of the green alga Rhizoclonium riparium, the photosynthetic responses to heavy metal pollution under different sublethal concentrations of copper was assessed. Photosynthetic rates were significantly low (p <0.05) at low copper concentrations, between (0.01 y 10 mg/l). Maximum photosynthetic values were shown at 30 y 60 mg/l and almost cero at 150 mg/ l of Cu....

Duguy, R; Moriniere, P; Le Milinaire, C.
Factors of mortality in marine turtles near the French coast of the Bay of Biscay have been recorded for four species: leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), loggerhead (Caretta caretta), Ridley's turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Most accidental captures of D. coriacea by fishing gears lead to drowning, but the main threat for the species is the ingestion of floating waste. Plastic bags induce occlusion or lesions in the stomach and subsequent death. For C. caretta, L. kempii and C. mydas, the pathology points out mainly two features: external or internal mycosis.

Factors determining the distribution of foraminiferal assemblages in Port Joinville Harbor (Ile d'Yeu, France): the influence of pollution ArchiMer
Debenay, Jean-pierre; Tsakiridis, Erica; Soulard, René; Grossel, Hubert.
Port Joinville harbor is located on an island. Thus, it receives only a few freshwater inputs, contrary to most of the areas where the influence of pollution on foraminiferal assemblages has been studied. The pollution in the harbor mainly results from the boats, including cleaning, painting and outfall of oil and motor-fuel.A total of 59 sediment samples was collected at three sampling periods (November-December 1997, May 1998 and September 1998). These samplings were supplemented by the study of algal flora and macrobenthos and by the study of water circulation by means of six stations where water was collected every hour during a tide cycle. Contaminants were analyzed in the last series of 17 samples. Total assemblages were used for this study. This...

Fairly processing rare and common species in multivariate analysis of ecological series - Application to macrobenthic communities from Algiers harbour ArchiMer
Mante, Claude; Claudet, Joachim; Rebzani Zahaf, C.
Systematic sampling of communities gives rise to large contingency tables summing up possible changes in the assemblages' structure. Such tables are generally analysed by multivariate statistical methods, which are ill-suited for simultaneously analysing rare and common species (Field et al., 1982). In order to separately process species belonging to either of these categories, we propose a statistical method to select common species in a sequence of ecological surveys. It is based on a precise definition of rarity, and depends on a rarity parameter. In this work, this parameter will be optimised so that the sub-table of common species captures the essential features of the complete table as well as possible. In this way we analysed the spatio-temporal...

Romero Romano, Carlos Osvaldo.

Oyster reefs are among the most threatened marine habitats globally. In Europe, oyster reefs have been extirpated from most locations within their historical range. Active restoration of the native oyster (Ostrea edulis) in Europe has grown substantially in recent years. In sharing experiences between oyster restoration projects in Europe at the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance conference, NORA2, in Edinburgh in May 2019, it became apparent that a number of similar barriers are experienced. This study identified the top 40 questions, which, if answered, would have the greatest influence on the policy and practice of oyster restoration in Europe. Initially 71 people were consulted across 28 institutions and 11 European countries to generate 194 questions....
